How Do Electric Bikes Work? Understanding the Mechanics and Technology in Europe

Electric bikes work by using a motor to assist with pedaling. In Europe, the motor is typically powered by a rechargeable battery. Most e-bikes feature either a hub motor, which is located in the wheel, or a mid-drive motor, located near the bike's pedals. The motor assists the rider based on the amount of force applied to the pedals, making uphill rides or long-distance trips easier. The motor usually cuts off when the bike reaches 25 km/h. You control the level of assistance through a handlebar-mounted control unit, giving you flexibility to adjust your ride.
